Sherman B. Atkins, the three year old son of Mr. Rowland Atkins, died on Sunday morning
of inflammation of the brain. The funeral obsequies will be solemnized today,
Wednesday, the Rev. J. A. Weigand will officiate assisted by the Revs. B. W.
Kindly and J. H. Ellegood. Interment will take place in the M. E. Cemetery.
Thomas J. Atkins, senior member of the undertaking firm of Thomas J. Atkins & Son,
died at his home on Union street, north, on Wednesday evening, aged 89 years, 4 months
and 11 days. Funeral services were held at his late residence on Monday
afternoon by the Rev. R. T. Coursey and his remains deposited in the Adkins
vault in the M. E. Cemetery, over which the deceased has spent so much time and
attention in building. Three daughters, Mrs. Emma Davidson, and the Misses Annie
and Clara Atkins and two sons, Messrs. D. T. and J. Roland Atkins, all of
Milton, survive him. He has also two brothers living, P. Page Atkins, of Milton
and Rev. John Atkins, of Nashville, Tenn.
Neva J. Baker, 83, of Milton passed away Monday, Jan. 12, 2015, at home. She
was born in Milton, the daughter of the late William M. and Amanda M. (Campbell)
Crouch.
She graduated from Milton High School, Class of 1949, and was the
salutatorian.
She was a bookkeeper for Swift Company in Georgetown for three
years, Draper Canning Company in Milton for four years and Reed Trucking Company
in Milton for 36 years.
She was a member of Goshen U.M. Church, Goshen U.M.
Women, Milton Century Club, Milton Senior Center and The Piece Makers Quilt
Guild of Milford. She was a founding member of Friends of the Milton Public
Library, serving as treasurer for many years.
In addition to her parents, she
was preceded in death by her husband, Ira R. “Dick” Baker; and brother, Daniel
Crouch.
She is survived by her children, Donna Schirmer of Milton, Karen H.
Wyatt and her husband Dale of Tavares, Fla. and I. Richard Baker and wife
Christie of Dover; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral
services will be held Saturday, Jan. 17, at 2 p.m., in the chapel of Short
Funeral Services, 416 Federal St., Milton, where friends may call after noon.
Interment will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Milton.

Mrs. Francis Barnes, of Milton, died last Saturday, Sept. 6, in the Beebe
Hospital, Lewes, after a short illness. She was born at Milton, daughter of
James P. and Eliza Clifton Leonard. She is survived by two brothers, William
Leonard of Philadelphia and George H. Leonard of Milton. Funeral services were
held at the Reed funeral home Wednesday afternoon, in charge of the Rev. Milton
Elliott, pastor of Grace Methodist Church. Interment was in Methodist Cemetery.
Mrs. Ann Baynum died at her home on Broad street early on Monday morning, aged 79 years.
The funeral was held at her late residence on Tuesday afternoon by the Rev. McCready
and interment made in the M. E. cemetery by J. R. Atkins.
James Alfred
Betts, one of Milton's best known citizens died at his home on Union Street on
Friday morning after several months of ilness. Age 79.
Funeral services were
held at his late home on Monday afternoon. Rev. D. K. Sturgis, pastor of M. P.
Church having charge of services and internment was made at Oddfellows Cemetery.
Mr. Betts leaves besides his wife, one daughter Lolita Betts of Milton.
Up to
2 years ago the deceased took an active part in town affairs. Serving on the
town council several terms. He was a trustee of Milton M. P. Church and a member
of that organization for many years.

Samuel Black, the infant child of Mr. Joseph L. Black, died on Friday morning, of
pneumonia, aged about one year. The funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon,
the Rev. T. R. Creamer officiating, and burial made in the M. E. Cemetery.
The dying request of Miss Mary Blocksom, of Milton, who died this month, was:
that she should be buried by the side of her mother. In order to do so, the grave
of her deceased brother's (David Blocksom) wife's grave had to be opened, which
person had been buried twenty-seven years. The clothing was still intact and the
slipper shoes almost perfect, as well as a gold ring which was left upon her
person when buried shone bright.

Mona W. Brown passed away Saturday, July 18, 2015 at the Milford Center. Mona was born and raised in Owenton, Ky. daughter of the late John and Maggie (Stafford) Wash. She lived in Owenton until moving Milton in the 1950's. Mona was a homemaker who loved spending time with her family, enjoyed watching NASCAR and was an avid reader. She was also a member of McColley's Chapel. In addition to her parents, Mona was preceded in death by her husband, Knoulton "Junior" Brown, Jr., in 1996; and her three siblings, Margaret James, Allen Brooks Wash, and Patsy Sherman. She is survived by two children, Bonnie B. Smith and husband Richard, and Dwayne A. Brown and wife Pauline, all of Milton; two grandchildren, Dana and Ty Brown; a brother, James "Jimmy" Wash and wife Shirley, of Owenton, Ky.; her grand dog, Ammo; and a host of extended family and friends. A funeral service will be 1 p.m., Wednesday, July 22, 2015 in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 416 Federal Street, Milton, with visitation after 11 a.m. Burial will in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Milton. Mrs. Mary C. Bryan died on Monday aged _8 years, 2 months and 21 days. Funeral
service will be held at her late residence this day, Wednesday, by the Rev. T.
R. Creamer, and her burial will take place in the M. E. Cemetery. Mrs. Bryan was
one of eleven children, two of whom died in early life, and the remaining nine
lived to grow up and Mary, she is the last of these, but one: a brother, Mr.
Edward Willey, yet remains, the last and only survivor of the flock. D. A. C.
Christine Bullock, 81, of Milton, passed away Monday, July 3, 2006, at the
home of her nephew in Milford.
Mrs. Bullock was born in Somerset, Ky.,
daughter of the late John P. and Madie Mounts Bullock.
She was a seamstress
for the Milford Manufacturing Co. for 40 years.
She enjoyed coin collecting,
playing bingo and solving word search puzzles.
In addition to her parents,
she was preceded in death by her brothers, Freddie Bullock and BeEler Howard
Bullock; and a sister, Alice Mae Betts.
She is survived by a sister, Irene B.
Hill of Milton; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 1
p.m., Friday, July 7, in the Chapel of Short Funeral Services, 416 Federal
Street, Milton., where friends may call after noon. Burial will be in Odd
Fellows Cemetery, Milton. Arrangements by Short Funeral Services, Milton.

BURTON - On Wednesday morning of typhoid pneumonia, Miss Lizzie Burton, daughter of Wm. E.[?]
Burton, at Millsboro, Del., aged about 15 years.
Mrs. Mary Cade, widow of the late Captain John Cade, died at her home on North
Union street at noon Monday. Mrs. Cade was Milton's oldest resident, being 87
years of age. She leaves two sons and three daughters: Mr. David W. Cade and
Archie Cade of New York. Mrs. Lida Lilly of Lewes, Mrs. Jennie Lofland of
California, and Miss Lillian Cade of Milton. Funeral services were held at her
late residence on Thursday by Rev. H. E. Reed, and interment made in the M. E.
Cemetery by J. R. Atkins, funeral director.
James P. Calhoun Sr. of Milton died of cancer Tuesday, Jan. 21, 1997, in his
home. He was 76.
Mr. Calhoun was a truck driver and assistant shop manager
for Draper King Cole for several years, and retired in 1996.
He was a member
of the Seaford Moose Lodge and an avid stock-car-racing fan.
He is preceded
in death by his wife, Gaynell Coker Calhoun, in 1991.
He is survived by four
daughters, Laura Ann Brown and Sherry Reed, both of Milton, Brenda Bowden of
Georgetown and Dawn Harrison of Seaford; three sons, James P. Calhoun Jr. of
South Carolina, George "Eddie" Calhoun of Milton and Ronnie E. Calhoun of
Cheswold; two stepdaughters, Martha Heck of Milton and Linda Reibsome of
Milford; three stepsons, Jerry Owens and Terry Owens, both of Lewes, and Ray
Owens of Millsboro; two sisters, Elizabeth Hopkins and Ruth Smith, both of
Milton; 13 grandchildren; 11 step-grandchildren; one great- granddaughter; and
four step-great-grandchildren.
Service will be 1 p.m. Friday in the Chapel of
Short Funeral Services, Federal Street, Milton, where friends may call from 7 to
9 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Milton. Instead of
flowers, the family suggests contributions to Delaware Hospice, Southern
Division, 600 Du Pont Highway, Georgetown, DE 19947.

James Albert Clifton, 51, of Bridgeville, Delaware died on Saturday, August
30, 2014 at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in Seaford, Delaware. James was born in
Milford, Delaware on February 24, 1963 to the late Elmer G. and Betty Mae Rogers
Clifton.
He was an avid sportsman, skilled handyman, enjoyed cooking,
gardening, going to auctions and he loved to spend time with his family. James
had a good and giving heart who would help anybody in need.
Besides his
parents he was preceded in death by his grandfather, Harley A. Rogers. He is
survived by his companion of 25 years, Nancy Jaroszewski of Bridgeville; three
children and spouses, a grandson, brother, grandmother, aunt and many other
extended family.
Interment was at the Oakley Church and Cemetery, Oakley Rd,
Ellendale, DE.

Ronda C. Davis, formerly of Mt. Airy, N.C., passed away Saturday, Jan. 5,
2013 at her home. Ronda was born on Jan. 31, 1955 in Elkin, N.C. She was the
daughter of the late William and Anna Belle Pilkington Moore.
She was
employed as a CNA with Surry Friends Seniors in Mt. Airy for 20 years, leaving
that position due to declining health. Ronda loved reading her Bible. She
cherished the special times spent with her family especially her grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, H. Dean
Davis; and her brother, Thomas R. Moore. She is survived by three sons and their
families, two sisters and their families, six grandchildren and several nephews.
Burial will be held in the Oakley Cemetery in Ellendale, Delaware.

Lost at sea as Captain of the "James Satterthwaite" along with his brother,
William P. LANK
The schooner "James Satterthwaite" was built at Milton in
1860,and was a large 2 master vessel.
In late December of 1883, it sailed
from Wilmington, De., with a cargo of fertilizer for Wilmington, N.C. On the
night of January 8, 1884, it was recorded that a strong southeast gale,
accompanied by heavy seas existed on the coast of N.C. It is suspected that the
ship floundered during that storm and disappeared with all hands aboard.

James W. Ponder, 74-year-old prominent Sarasota county pioneer, died Sunday
at his summer home at Ventnor, N. J. He was a son of Governor James Ponder of
Delaware, and came to Sarasota in 1911. He was chairman of the Manatee County
commission in 1921 when Sarasota became a separate county.

Pauline Emily West Powell, age 83, of Selbyville, passed away Tuesday, Sept.
20, 2011, at the Delaware Hospice Center in Milford.
She was born Feb. 25,
1928, in Frankford, daughter of the late, Elmer and Emma (Banks) West.
Pauline was a devoted and loving mother to all who graced her door. She will be
missed and remembered by many.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded
in death by her son, Ollie C. Powell; grandson, S.Sgt. Walter Cohee, III; her
sisters, Agnes Melson, Madeline Hickman, Marcella Corby and Mattie Vickers; and
her ex-husband, Ollie R. Powell.
Pauline is survived by her children, Jeanne
Cohee and her husband Walt, Jr. of Mardela Springs, Md., and Alvin Powell and
his wife Coralee of Ocean Pines, Md.; a foster daughter, Courtney Davis of
Baltimore, Md.; grandchildren, Ollie C. Powell of Ocean City, Md., Kris and
Heather Cohee of Mardela Springs, Md., Stacy and Eileen Powell of New Jersey,
Kelly and Peter Varney of Salisbury, Md. and Nora Sue Powell of Ft. Lauderdale,
Fla.; great-grandchildren, Christy Lathie and Marina Cohee of Mardela Springs,
Md., Bradley Sherman, Lilly and Mathew Varney of Salisbury, Md., Owen Powell of
North Carolina, Rhyan and Hunter Powell of Virginia and Morgan Powell of New
Jersey. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews in Delaware and North
Carolina.
A funeral service will be noon, Saturday, Sept. 24, at the chapel
of Melson Funeral Services, 43 Thatcher Street, Frankford, where friends may
call after 11 a.m. Burial will be in the Banks Family Cemetery in Millville.

Accidental Drowning. We learn from private sources that while the Schooner
Benj. T. Biggs was crossing Hatteras shoals during the severe weather on the
night of the 1st instant, a seaman named Primrose, was found to be missing. He
had been sent into the lee fore rigging to set the side light and, it is
supposed, lost his hold in descending and fell overboard. The deceased was aged
about 22 years, and of a good and well-known family in the State of Delaware.

Oliver P. Thayer, 79, of Milton, passed away Friday Oct. 10, 2011, at
Christiana Medical Center.
Oliver was born in Wilmington, the son of the late
Howard and Laura (Oscar) Thayer. At the age of 18, he began living with the
Martin Black family in Milton and was an aide to the family until his death. He
enjoyed doing outdoor tasks and gardening. Oliver had also worked in the
Housekeeping Department for Beebe Medical Center for 24 years, retiring several
years ago. He was a member of the Eagle's Nest Fellowship Church in Milton.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his foster family:
Martin, Jane and J.L. Black and Herman Black.
His survivors include his
caretaker's family: Candy Jennings and children Buddy, Robert, Jean and Debbra;
friends Pat Netz, Bill Jennings and Duane Wingrove; one sister, Frances Hughes
of California; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 1
p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 12, in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 416 Federal
St., Milton where friends may call one hour prior. Burial will be in Goshen M.E.
Cemetery, Milton. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to

Wells, Henry Hill- He died in the neighborhood of Philada on Sep 1, 1794 at 9:30 am and was enterred in the burial grounds of the people called Quakers in the City of Philadelphia on the same day he died.
