HAMILTON posted by Alice A. Metzloff Alsblugown@aol.com on Thursday, September 27, 2001
Looking for information regarding my paternal twice great grandfather John HAMILTON. I do not have much information about him other than the following: I believe John HAMILTON was born in Delaware, Sussex County in 1844 (Parents/siblings unknown)due to it's proximity to Federalsburg, Caroline County, MD and East New Market, Dorchester County, MD, two places that John HAMILTON shows up with documented proof. Sometime in his teens/early 20's, John HAMILTON leaves birth state of Delaware for Federalsburg, Caroline County, Maryland/East New Market, Dorchester County,MD. Meets and marries 18 year old Susan M. Page of East New Market, Dorchester County, MD on September 29, 1871 by a Rev. Jas. L. Kenny. After marriage, JOHN HAMILTON and wife, Susan M. Page, return to East New Market, Dorchester County, MD where they raise three sons: William Andrew Hamilton (my paternal great grandfather) born 1/23/1873, Norris Hamilton and Charles Hamilton (birthdates unknown). Sometime within their late teens/early 20s (assumptions): William Andrew Hamilton moves to Beaver Falls, PA; Charles Hamilton moves to Washington, DC; and Norris Hamilton moves to Oxford, Talbot county, MD. (Confirmed in William Andrew's March 9,1939 obituary) I believe that John HAMILTON/Susan M. Page moved from East New Market, Dorchester County, MD to Oxford, Talbot County, MD to live out their old age with their son Norris Hamilton (unconfirmed). It is possible they died and were buried within this Oxford, Talbot County, MD area. All three sons of John HAMILTON and Susan M. (Page) are deceased. Charles and Norris Hamilton would have died between 1950 and 1970. Married or had children unknown. William Andrew Hamilton died at 66 years of age on March 3, 1939 in Canton, Stark county, OH and is buried within Beaver Falls Cemetery, Beaver Falls, Beaver County, PA along side son (my paternal grandfather) William Paige Hamilton.

NEWBOLD, POLK posted by Cree Newbold newbold@comcast.net on Sunday, May 25, 2003
Does anyone know if someone has done a genealogy on the family that produced Charles POLK, Governor of Delaware from Bridgeville in the late 1820s? My specific interest is in learning as accurately as possible the location of the land that his father, also named Charles POLK (grandfather was also named Charles, I believe), inhabited in the 1770s and 1780s. I've determined that it was in the general area just east of present day Bridgeville, Delaware, in what was Nanticoke Hundred. Here is a transcription of the best land record describing this location: In the book "Land Records of Sussex County Delaware 1769 - 1782" by F. Edward Wright, there is an entry about the tract of land called "Fruitful Plain". To quote: "To Charles Polk from Isaac Layfield, son of George Layfield of Worcester County, Maryland, yeoman, 19 March 1777. Tract called "Fruitful Plain", 540 acres on the main branch of Nanticoke River in Great Neck formerly Smiths Neck adjoining lands of Francis NEWBOLD, "Unity Forge" tract, originally granted by Proprietary of Maryland to George Layfield by patent dated 15 July 1695, then a part of Somerset County, later Worcester County, and now Sussex County. George Layfield died without issue and the land descended to his brother's son Thomas Layfield who died and by his last will devised same to his son Thomas Layfield who resurveyed the same and died leaving issue one son, Thomas Layfield to whom the land descended who died intestate and without issue and the said lands descended to the aforesaid Isaac Layfield who is eldest son of George Layfield who was brother to Thomas Layfield, the son and devises of the first above named Thomas Layfield the brother's sons of the original planter. 7 May 1777." The reason for my interest is that my ancestors are the aforementioned Francis NEWBOLD (and sons Francis, John, & Thomas), who lived in the same area as did Charles Polk. If someone who has done research on Charles Polk and has already pinpointed the location, then my task is that much easier!

Mary's maiden name was possibly LYNCH or MCCABE. I don't know anything else about Mary. Curtis had at least one sister, Maud E., who married Everett Burke Stevens and had one son, Everett B., Jr. After Mary's death, Vaughn Sr. moved to Philly where he remarried. Vaughn Jr. lived with grandparents and/or the Stevens Family. Letitia passed away about 55 years ago. Most of the family is buried in the Red Men Cemetery in Selbyville. My maternal grandparents were Russell F. WILGUS and Carrie Mae EVANS WILGUS. Russell was the son of Robert and Valerie (Vallie) WILGUS of Roxana. He had one brother and 2 sisters, Robert, Evelyn, and Myrtha. Carrie was raised in Ocean View. Her mother's name was Mary, and Mary's brother's name was Ulyses (although he may have been half-brother). Siblings of Samuel were James, William, Mary, Paris, Edward. I am searching for the father of James b.1799 and beyond. Many of this Moore family lived in the Milton, Harbeson area during the 1900s.

SMITH posted by Joni Rabena jrabena@mcburney.ca on Monday, February 19, 2007
I need suggestions to find the family of John and Amelia SMITH listed on the 1860 census in Baltimore Hundred, Sussex, Delaware. John and his son were lighthouse keepers on the 1860 census. I believe this John may have been the first lighthouse keeper on Fenwick Island. I believe my great grandfather, William SMITH and his sister Josephine were the grandchildren of John and Amelia and lived with them. William (b approx 1860) is my great grandfather. Any help in tracking this family after 1860 will be greatly appreciated.

CAREY, CARY posted by Helen Carey hscgenealogy@aol.com on Monday, April 9, 2007
Although I have information to share about the ancestry of Zachariah CAREY / CARY, I hope to learn the names of the children and wife of Zachariah CAREY, Sussex Co., Delaware. He was born to Ebenezer and Hannah CARY between 1770 - 1780; it appears that he died between 1830 and 1840. I have located Zachariah's household in Dagsboro Hundred in 1800 and 1810; in Nanticoke Hundred in 1820 and 1830. Zachariah's wife's name is not known; she was born and died within the same time range as Zachariah. According to the 1820 census in his household Zachariah had 1 'free white male' born between 1802 and 1804; 3 born between 1804 and 1810; 1 born between 1810 and 1820; and 1 'free white female' born between 1794 and 1806. I hope to hear from someone who can provide names and specific birth information for Zachariah CAREY/CARY's children as well as the name of his wife! I will be glad to share what I know about his ancestry!

MCCABE, MURRAY posted by Annette Hoffman a3p@comcast.net on Monday, May 21, 2007
Looking for further information on the Severn Handy MURRAY and wife, Nancy MCCABE MURRAY family. Was told she was buried in the Joe Long Cemetery, but have not found any record of it. However, I did find on your site her listed in the Rural Selbyville Cemetery, at Selbyville, Baltimore Hundred, Sussex County, Delaware. Unfortunately, her dates must be incorrect. It reads, "Nancy, wife of Severn Murray, died 1874, age 81. born 1873". Also, I just printed out information from ancestory.com's Delaware Marriages, 1645-1899 and it gives their marriage date as: 1 Jan 1845. I have not found any information that he had more than one wife, but the oldest child was born in 1811. The death date I've found for Severn was in 1840. Any insights would be welcome!

HOPKINS posted by Joseph Lake joslake@sbcglobal.net on Saturday, August 18, 2007
Researching John HOPKINS, Revolutionary War Soldier in the Sussex Co. DE company of Capt. William Peery. (William Peery witnessed the will of John Hopkins). The will was made and signed on 25 Feb 1787 and witnessed also by Mary Peery and Joseph Miller. John Hopkins had 3 wives: Sophia McIlvain (3rd); Hessie Stephenson and Mary Vint. 9 sons named Josiah, David, Samuel, Cornelius, Lemuel, Archibald, John, William and Robert. Daughters: Elizabeth Stephenson, wife of David, Jannet, wife of Samuel Hudson, and Lydia Hopkins. Father of John: Archibald. According to the will John had some 500 acres of land, some of which was probably near Cool Springs. At least two of his sons emigrated to Pickaway Co, Ohio (John (before 1800) and Samuel (date unknown), and probably a Grandson named James (spouse Lydia Goslee), probably a son of William, c 1810. Interested in exchanging with other researchers.
